ABSTRACT
Bad breath (halitosis) is a common phenomenon that plays an important role in a person’s daily life and often affects human relationships. Halitosis is a polyetiologic condition. It is often defined as a foul smell of exhaled air. Its incidence in the population is 2–87%, in average, 44–54%. The standard halitosis classification distinguishes between: the true halitosis, which includes physiological, pathological oral and pathological extraoral halitosis; pseudo-halitosis and halitophobia. Chronic tonsillitis is accompanied with pathological extraoral form of halitosis.
The objective of the study is to estimate the incidence of halitosis in chronic tonsillitis and the dynamics of its severity against the background of its treatment. We have observed 23 patients with chronic tonsillitis, aged from 26 to 59 years (7 men and 16 women). All the patients complained of tickling sensation and discomfort in the throat, the formation of caseous masses in the tonsils, sensation of a foreign object in the throat, as well as the feeling of bed smell in the oral cavity. All the patients underwent the standard ENT examination, clinical blood test, C-reactive protein test, antistreptolysin O test, microbiological examination of palatine tonsil lacunae, halimetry, special survey before and after treatment (43 questions of Halitosis Questionnaire, School of Dental Medicine, University of Basel, Switzerland, Prof. Dr. Med. Dent. A. Filippi, 2009). The entire patient was provided the medication therapy with natural immune correctors and ultrasonic sanitation of palatine tonsils (antiseptic solution rinsing, 7–10 procedures). Based on the survey and instrumental halimetry, a positive result of the therapy was observed in all the patients. A significant decrease in the intensity of the breath odour or its total elimination was found.
