ABSTRACT
The review presents the literature data on the prevalence of nasal septum perforations (NSP) in the population and the incidence of postoperative nasal septum perforations in the structure of rhinosurgery complications. The author describes the main causes of persistent NSP both at the stage of surgical treatment of nasal septum deviation and in early and long-term postoperative period. The paper describes the features of clinical manifestations of NSP from pathogenetic point of view and substantiates the necessity of surgical treatment. The main approaches to the closure of nasal septum perforations, used in domestic and foreign practice, the advantages and disadvantages of specific methods of surgical treatment and their results are presented. The author lists the reasons of low efficacy of NSP surgical treatment, which are not directly related to surgical technique. The literature data on pre- and postoperative methods of modifying the nasal septum tissues, which can affect the final outcome of surgical treatment of NSP, are presented. The paper points out the lack of knowledge of morphological features of tissues around postoperative NSP, the need for differential approach to surgical treatment depending on the cause of the formation of NSP and the promising, according the author, ways to improve the efficacy of surgical treatment of septum perforations.
