ABSTRACT
Abstract. Purpose of the publication. To review scientific research on puncture of the maxillary sinus. Over the past 20 years, this method of treating acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of the paranasal sinuses has been actively criticized. In particular, it is argued that puncture of the maxillary sinus has no evidence of effectiveness, is extremely painful, carries a high risk of serious complications and even the possibility of contracting HIV infection. The first part of the publication discusses in detail scientific works confirming the effectiveness of puncture and also dwells on the reasons for studies indicating its ineffectiveness. Literary data on pain during sinus puncture were analyzed, according to which the pain during the procedure is not significant. The puncture is well tolerated by most patients.
