ABSTRACT
Abstract. Relevance. Odontogenic cysts of the jaws are one of the most common pathologies encountered in dental practice. Dentigerous (follicular) cysts account for up to 15% of all cysts. Clinical case. This article is devoted to a clinical case of an odontogenic cyst of the maxillary sinus, which penetrated the maxillary sinus and led to the development of maxillary sinusitis. The paper examines in detail the anatomical features of the maxillary sinus, the patient’s diagnosis and treatment history, and the characteristics of the surgical intervention. This clinical example demonstrates how an incorrect diagnosis and, as a result, an incorrectly chosen surgical volume and tactics led to disease progression. During the initial examination of the paranasal sinuses, a dentigerous cyst was visualized in the left maxillary sinus, which the otolaryngologist likely mistakenly identified as a sinus retention cyst. The doctor chose the appropriate removal method — endoscopic maxillotomy. Odontogenic cysts should be operated on externally because they are alveolar ridge cysts and have a bony wall that is the cortical plate of the alveolar ridge. Discussion. The maxilla is an area of interest for physicians of various specialties, including otolaryngologists, dentists, maxillofacial surgeons, and oncologists. An interdisciplinary approach helps improve the quality of medical care. The knowledge of related colleagues can enrich the experience of young specialists. To minimize diagnostic errors, it is necessary to perform radiographic tomography of the entire maxillofacial region with the involvement of a radiologist and a detailed protocol.
