ABSTRACT
Tracheostomy is an essential operation for critical patients dependent on an artificial pulmonary ventilation unit. The patients of intensive care units, in which the pulmonary ventilation more than 7 days is planned, should be transferred to respiration through tracheostoma. Tracheostomy makes it possible to reduce the dead respiratory space volume, terminate the patients’ sedation, simplify the access to the downstream respiratory tract sections, prevent the mucous membrane and laryngeal cartilages modifications etc.
Transcutaneous tracheostomy is a method of choice because as it is faster and more convenient. It is performed by emergency physicians without the participation of any other specialists. There is a lot of data about tracheostomy methods, the period of its application, its complications and patients’ management after the surgery.
The objective of the study is to systematize the currently available data about the preferable tracheostomy methods, the period of its application, its complications and patients’ management after the surgery.
