ABSTRACT
The article is devoted to the stages of studying nystagmus, the most valuable vestibular reaction in diagnostic terms. It tells about the development of methods for recording nystagmus, from visual assessment to objective methods: electro- and videonystagmography. The importance of excluding gaze fixation when assessing nystagmus is emphasized, which both of these methods provide. The author dwells separately on the works of remarkable scientists, vestibulologists, and researchers of nystagmus – the leader in the 1970s–1990s of the vestibular laboratory at the Leningrad Research Institute of Ear, Throat, Nose, and Speech, Professor Mikhail Levashov and the long-term head of the laboratory of clinical labyrinthology of the Belarusian Research Institute of Neurology, Professor Abram Sklyut.
