ABSTRACT
The purpose of the publication is to review scientific research on puncture of the maxillary sinus (PMS). Over the past 20 years, this method of treating acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of the paranasal sinuses has been actively criticized. In particular, it is argued that puncture of the maxillary sinus has no evidence of effectiveness, is extremely painful, carries a high risk of serious complications and even the possibility of contracting HIV-infection. The second part of the publication discusses in detail the scientific work on the safety of PMS, alternative puncture, and invasive methods of treating sinusitis: endoscopic sinus surgery and balloon sinuplasty. Studies are presented showing that general practitioners treat ENT diseases less effectively than otolaryngologists. Indications for PMS have been formulated.
