ABSTRACT
Abstract. The purpose of this work is to consider the practice of using silicone in middle ear surgery highlighting its positive and negative aspects. The problem of controlling the adhesive process in the operated middle ear still remains relevant in otosurgery. In the first months after surgery, the tympanic cavity is a closed space filled with wound fluid. From the moment the operation is completed, the neotympanic flap, areas of damaged mucoperiosteum, and areas of exposed bone actively regenerate, which, under such conditions, can lead to the formation of scar adhesion between the structures of the middle ear or to atelectasis of the tympanic cavity. This course of the postoperative period will lead to decreased hearing in the operated ear and decreased satisfaction with the treatment. In the 20th century, middle ear surgery was actively developing, and methods were being developed to prevent scarring in the operated middle ear. One of the most promising directions in this area is the development of materials implanted into the middle ear. Over the past century, many such materials have been developed, and silicone is one of them. Silicone has been used in tympanoplasty to prevent adhesion between middle ear structures since the 1950s. Purpose. To consider the practice of using silicone in middle ear surgery and to highlight its positive and negative aspects.
