Comparative analysis of the effectiveness of various methods of submucous resection of inferior turbinates in patients with drug-induced rhinitis

ABSTRACT
Abstract. Objective. To evaluate the effectiveness of various methods of submucous resection of the inferior turbinates in patients with drug-induced rhinitis. Patients and methods. The study included 30 patients aged 18 to 60 years who had used topical decongestants for 1 to 10 years. Patients were divided into 3 groups of 10 people each. The first group underwent radiofrequency submucous ablation of the inferior turbinates, the second group — cold plasma submucous ablation, the third group — laser submucous destruction. All patients additionally underwent lateralization of the inferior turbinates. The control group comprised 10 patients. The ciliary beat frequency and rhinomanometry parameters were evaluated before surgery and 2 weeks, 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery. Results. Six months after surgery, all groups showed statistically significant restoration of ciliary motility and nasal airway patency to normal values. The fastest recovery of nasal breathing was observed after cold plasma ablation (769.2±45 ml/s), but this method was accompanied by more crusts in the early postoperative period. Conclusion. All three submucous resection methods show high efficacy in the treatment of rhinitis medicamentosa, with achievement of normal parameters after 6 months of follow-up.
