Relationship between the parameters of the width of the pyriform aperture region

ABSTRACT
Abstract. Although studies on surgical expansion of the pyriform aperture (PA) to relieve nasal obstruction are currently limited, available data show encouraging positive results. Objective. To determine the relationship between the maximum pyriform aperture width and other parameters of the pyriform aperture region width. Materials and methods. The study was based on identifying the relationship between the pyriform aperture width and the nasal cavity width between the origins of the inferior turbinate bony bases, as well as between the maximum pyriform aperture width and the pyriform aperture width in the axial plane of the inferior turbinate bases. These parameters were determined using cone-beam computed tomography data from 577 Caucasian individuals over 18 years of age (273 men and 304 women), divided into age groups according to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations (18–44, 45–59, 60–74, and ?75 years). Results and discussion. In all cases of correlation analysis, we obtained a strong (Pearson correlation coefficient ?0.7) or very strong (Pearson correlation coefficient?0.9), statistically significant (p < 0.001), positive correlation. The results obtained through correlation analysis show that in all cases, the width parameters under study are closely and directly (Pearson correlation coefficient ?0.7) statistically significantly (p < 0.001) interrelated, and an increase in one directly increases the other. Conclusions. The study revealed a direct, strong or very strong correlation between the pyriform aperture width and the width of the nasal cavity between the origins of the inferior turbinate bony bases, as well as between the pyriform aperture width and the pyriform aperture width in the axial plane of the inferior turbinates. Based on the obtained study results, one of the measured parameters can be used for screening. If surgical enlargement of the pyriform aperture is likely, all the described parameters must be determined, since the type and volume of surgical intervention may depend on this. The obtained results should be used in the diagnostic algorithm if pyriform aperture stenosis is suspected.
