Condition of the ear in patients in the long term after a temporal bone fracture

ABSTRACT
Abstract. The main cause of damage to the bones of the skull is low and high kinetic traumatic effects. Despite the fact that the pyramid of the temporal bone is the thickest part of the base of the skull, it can be damaged when exposed to high intensity forces. In the general structure of head injuries, the proportion of fractures of the skull bones ranges from 2 to 20%, and fractures of the bones of the base of the skull are diagnosed in 4% of cases of severe traumatic brain injuries. In men, damage to the temporal bone is 3-4 times more common than in women. Unilateral fractures of the temporal bone are more common — 71% than bilateral fractures — 29% The symptoms of a temporal bone fracture are very diverse and depend on the line of passage of the fracture, as well as on the degree of concomitant brain damage. Depending on the traumatic destruction of certain structures of the temporal bone, the patient may develop sensorineural or conductive hearing loss, vestibular disorders, otolycorrhoea, bleeding from the ear, impaired function of the facial nerve. In this article, we present two clinical cases demonstrating the possible condition of the ear in the long term after a temporal bone fracture, as well as the importance of timely surgical intervention by an otorhinolaryngologist, which can prevent the development of persistent anatomical and functional disorders.
