ABSTRACT
Abstract. Introduction. Chronic otitis media with cholesteatoma has been extensively studied. Our understanding of the pathogenesis has become more comprehensive over time. But the contralateral ear in patients with cholesteatoma remains unstudied. we conducted the present study in order to describe alterations of the contralateral ear in patients with COM with cholesteatoma. Materials and Methods. Cross-sectional and descriptive methods were used in 95 chronic otitis media patients with cholesteatoma. An information form was completed for all patients including demographic data, otoscopy, pure- tone audiometry, tympanometry, and high-resolution computed tomography(HRCT). All data were processed using SPSS version 20.0 software and descriptive statistical tests. Results. According to otoscopy, pure- tone audiometry, HRCT, and graphical analysis, over 50% of patients experienced disorders in their contralateral ear. Otoscopy analysis showed that 38.4% of patients had alteration in their contralateral ear, with the most common alteration being a retracted tympanic membrane. Pure-tone audiometry showed that 51.6% of patients had hearing impairment in their contralateral ear with 44.9% experiencing conductive hearing loss, 38.8% experiencing sensorineural hearing loss, and 16.3% experiencing mixed hearing loss. HRCT analyses indicated that 31.6% of patients had disorders in their contralateral ear. Additionally, poor pneumatization was observed in 34.9% of adults, compared to only 8.3% in children. Conclusion. More than 50% of COM with cholesteatoma patients in one ear have a disorder in their contralateral ear. We conclude that patients diagnosed with cholesteatoma in one ear are significantly more likely to exhibit abnormalities of the contralateral ear.
