ABSTRACT
Abstract. Objective. To improve the method for measuring the postoperative cavity volume after canal walldown mastoidectomy using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) of the temporal bones and to compare it with the liquid volumetric method. Patients and methods. While the traditional liquid volumetric method is simple, it has several drawbacks, including high error rates and difficulty in obtaining accurate data when inflammatory changes or pathological masses are present in the postoperative cavity. Consequently, an alternative method based on MDCT segmentation in 3D Slicer software, allowing the creation of a 3D model of the cavity and precise volume measurement, was proposed. The study included patients who had undergone canal wall-down mastoidectomy with manifestations of the operated ear disease, requiring revision surgery to reduce the volume of the postoperative cavity mastoid segment. Three independent researchers measured the volume of 20 postoperative cavities using both methods. Data assessment involved calculating the arithmetic mean (across three indicators) and the range of values. Results. The 3D Slicer MDCT-based measurement method demonstrated superior accuracy with an error of ±0.065 ml, whereas the error for the liquid volumetric method was ±0.318 ml. Conclusion. The proposed method is non-invasive, reproducible, and allows measurements regardless of the condition of the postoperative cavity and neo-membrane. It can be performed remotely without an in-person patient consultation.
