ABSTRACT
Abstract. Introduction. Laryngeal chondroma is a rare neoplasm, and even less common is chondrosarcoma of the larynx, accounting for 1% of all. This is a benign tumor and originates primarily from the signet of the cricoid cartilage. Initially, laryngeal chondroma is asymptomatic or with symptoms characteristic of inflammatory diseases. Subsequently, as it grows in size, it narrows the lumen of the larynx, and when it grows toward the esophagus, it narrows the lumen of the esophagus creating the need for a tracheostomy and gastrostomy. Over the course of 32 years, we observed three cases of laryngeal chondroma. We present these observations. Objective. The authors present a case from practice of laryngeal chondroma. The tumor grew from the signet of the cricoid cartilage. Results. The patients underwent surgical intervention with preliminary tracheostomy and laryngotomy with removal of laryngeal chondroma. Conclusions. The clinical picture can be diverse and directly depends on the size and location of the tumor: complaints such as hoarseness, shortness of breath, or bulky neck formation are the main clinical manifestations. It is not always possible to obtain biopsy material from cartilaginous tumors due to their submucosal localization. Tumors of cartilaginous origin are resistant to radiation and chemotherapy; therefore, surgical treatment is necessary. The type and scope of surgery depend on the extent of the tumor and its location.
